We're among the finalists for this year's Ambies® Awards! Our two-part series, Uganda's Hidden Rainbow, was nominated for Best Documentary.
The series captures how LGBTQI+ Ugandans responded in the days, weeks, and months following the passing of the Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023, a draconian anti-gay law that imposes 10 years imprisonment and, in some cases, the death penalty.
In Not Enough Sun, we meet Musana, who was on holiday with her girlfriend when news of the law reached her via text message. Musana suddenly faced a painful decision: Should she make a new life in Kenya or risk returning home?
A Mother’s Letter tells the story of Rihanna, a young woman arrested for being trans in 2014 under an earlier version of the law. The ordeal tore a rift between Rihanna and her religious mother. We hear how her arrest radically changed the course of their lives - and how Rihanna’s mom unexpectedly became a staunch ally.
We couldn't be more excited about being nominated and standing alongside some of the best audio storytellers in the world. We hope Uganda’s Hidden Rainbow draws much-needed attention to the tightening grip on LGBTQI+ rights across Africa while highlighting how moments of connection and joy serve as powerful acts of resistance.
