Hi there,
Welcome to our newsletter - Audio Reporting, Africa Style!
In December 1923, the first radio broadcast in Africa hit the airwaves, marking the first recorded history of radio on the African continent. In 1982, the first community radio station in Africa was launched in Homa Bay, Kenya. Since then, radio has been the most popular medium in Africa, and it’s still where the majority of the continent gets their news, information, and entertainment.
For us at Radio Workshop, it all starts with radio. For World Radio Day this year, we produced Dear Radio, a podcast episode that shares four personal stories from Tanzania, Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda. Take a listen — and we’d love to hear what you think.
There’s so much that goes into making radio and podcasts, and so much that is unique to doing this work in Africa. That’s what we want to talk about. This newsletter will bring together African audio producers, reporters, and storytellers so we can learn from each other, share our experiences and take a look behind the scenes.
Stay tuned — our next newsletter will feature top tips from audio producers at the Africa Media Festival.
Thank you for reading,
Lesedi Mogoatlhe
